Learning to build a business has been an exciting journey.  With much prayer, hard work, and patience, it is possible to build a business from scratch even as a homeschooler.  I have been blessed with the opportunity to begin my own e-commerce store.  I would like to tell you about my business, and give you some ideas that may help you to attempt a similar journey.

I produce e-Books from public domain authors of the 1800’s.  I try to have a variety of topics and authors available for immediate download.  Some of my authors include WHG Kingston, RM Ballantyne, Isabella Alden, Oliver Optic, Horatio Alger, and Edward Ellis.  My categories are Literature for the Family, Skills for the Family, Historical Fiction, and Old West.  I am always adding new books and new categories for my customers.  My website is www.olde-books.com.

My parents have always homeschooled my sister and me as well as encouraging us in our separate interests.  As a part of our homeschooling, we are taught a generational vision of victory and success through the LORD’s blessing.  All of these things led to my interest in entrepreneurship, long before I even knew how a business worked!

Throughout my early desires of owning a business, I did not know how and what to do to get started.  My parents found Homeschool Entrepreneur while searching for entrepreneurship materials.  Through Deb Maubach’s help and assistance in her e-course, I was able to learn some important business skills that are very practical in my business.  I am very thankful for her thoroughness, time, and effort in creating the course.  Without her guidance, I am sure to have made some serious blunders that may have cost me plenty of money, not to mention time!

After my family purchased Homeschool Entrepreneur’s course, we providentially found another e-Book on making old books into e-Books.  Since my love of old books was as strong as my love for entrepreneurship, this seemed to be a perfect combination.  The same day that I prayerfully decided to start a business like what was suggested in the e-Book on old books, my parents and I purchased one year of hosting for my website!  Much research followed, using the Homeschool Entrepreneur e-course, in deciding the format of my business.  Another portion of my research was in what books to feature on my website.

My Dad learned HTML to draft my website from scratch, while I worked on my business plan.  My Mom found different marketing avenues to use when I was ready to launch the business.  My sister designed the logos and graphics for the website.  We all continually prayed over how I would want my business to be portrayed to potential customers.

I cannot tell you what a blessing it was to have supportive parents.  They were alongside of me from the start with valuable advice and aid.  Though neither of them had much experience in business, they were willing to learn alongside me to make this endeavor successful through the LORD’s blessing.

Finally, along with many character qualities learned (among which is patience) we were ready to release the website.  My parents spread the word to our family’s friends, and they continued to pass along the news of my business.

His first sale!

The same day, about noon, I went to see if anyone had visited my site and subscribed to my newsletter.  Sure enough, some had.  I saw a set of three comments from another customer.  The first two were subscriptions and comments…but the last said “Could I print the book I downloaded?” which meant they had purchased a book.  I am sure my hands shook as I checked the other email where PayPal informed me of a purchase.  Through the LORD’S blessing, the first purchase was on the first day of business!  Praise the LORD!

Currently, I am still depending on the LORD’s guidance as I seek to continue to build my customer list and to develop more resources for families to enjoy.  I also am trying to continue marketing Olde-Books.com through advertisements on blogs and other websites that I trust on the internet.  After three months of operating my business, I still have a long way to go.

Throughout my business, I desired to stay completely out of debt as far as it was possible.  This was pressed upon my heart, not only by the LORD, but by those whom He placed in my path as counselors, including my Homeschool Entrepreneur Course.  The LORD had provided me with a blessing through the money my parents encouraged me to save throughout the years.  I was able to purchase the necessary services for my website without having to borrow from anyone.  My personal opinion on debt is that although the LORD has given numerous warnings of the dangers of debt in the Bible, sometimes it is still necessary to borrow to start a business.  The only caution, then, is to be very careful of how much you get into debt; you do not want to be in a position that if your business fails, you have an enormous debt to pay.

Services Ben used:

When you are beginning an e-commerce business, there are many materials to help you along the way.  My original website hosting was through Bluehost.com, which has proved very satisfactory with the tools that are included in the package.  One of the greatest assistants to someone marketing an e-product is DLGuard.  DLGuard makes it incredibly simple to design your e-store, use pictures of your products, and to create the descriptions.  One of the greatest points is that it automatically saves the customer information and purchases.  You do not need to know HTML and web design to work with this shopping cart.  If you use DLGuard, you may also find DLGAdvance a great help.  DLGAdvance tool integrates with DLGuard to help you import customers.  DLGAdvance allows you to send mass emails and newsletters with a built-in editor.  I have found both of these tools to be a great help for me as I was started Olde-Books.com.

Ben’s advice to others:

My advice to anyone starting their own business would be to find entrepreneurs in your area and learn from them.  They probably have many experiences that they would be glad to share with you.  From my personal experience, most entrepreneurs are glad to give anyone advice to help them avoid the pitfalls they themselves made.  A pastor gave me unlimited advice on which books to use on my website, as well as the experiences he has gained throughout his own book publishing business.

I would also recommend Homeschool Entrepreneur as a valuable source to learn to be an entrepreneur.  I gained helpful information and resources throughout my time using this course.  Even now, I still use this resource to help understand business!

Also, for young entrepreneurs like myself, it is really necessary to trust your parents on time management.  Personally, it is too easy to become gung-ho and become a workaholic by spending an excessive amount of time in the business.  Keep your priorities straight at all times; there is nothing more important than what your parents require of you.

All in all, remember that the LORD has in His hands the results of your work.  Commit your ways to Him, and He will work for your spiritual growth throughout the business.  Whatever is the result, whether your business sinks or swims, you will have learned valuable skills that will be beneficial for all of your life.

Good advice, Ben! Thanks for sharing, we look forward to seeing your business grow! ~Deb Maubach

Written by Ben himself, here is his story of how he created his first business. One of our first Entrepreneurship 101 students, we cannot take any credit whatsoever for this young man’s success. Ben is one of the most hard-working, creative, dedicated young men of integrity that we’ve had a chance to know.

Supported by a loving family, his business has involved many complicated details, including using a shopping cart.  You must take a look at his selection of vintage works available seamlessly through a well designed cart, download manager, and the security of PayPal. I know, because I bought the Wild Food on the Trail ebook, something I have been wanting for awhile.

If you haven’t accessed your free book yet, be sure to head over to Olde-Books.com and see what you’re missing!
